Living in Puerto Morelos: what to know before you move
Puerto Morelos sits on the Caribbean coast between Cancún and Playa del Carmen, about 25 minutes from Cancún International Airport. It's small, green and slower than its neighbors, which is exactly why people move here.
Two sides of town
The town is divided by protected mangroves. On the coast is the beachside village, with the plaza, the pier and the beach. Across Highway 307 is the colonia, with residential neighborhoods, supermarkets and everyday services, where many full-time residents live.
Getting there and around
Cancún airport is about 25 to 30 minutes away by car. Puerto Morelos also has a Tren Maya station. In town, most people get around on foot, by bike, by colectivo or by taxi.
Reef, beach and cenotes
The Puerto Morelos Reef National Park lies about half a kilometer offshore and is part of the Mesoamerican Reef. It keeps the water inside the lagoon calm. Inland, the Ruta de los Cenotes connects Puerto Morelos with Leona Vicario, with dozens of cenotes along the road.
Seasons and sargassum
The dry season, December to April, is the most popular time for long stays. Sargassum does reach Puerto Morelos in some months; the reef reduces its impact and the municipality cleans the main beach, but it's worth checking a sargassum tracker before you choose dates.
