Why Puerto Morelos is different
The reef sits about half a kilometer offshore and takes the force out of the water, so the town beach is calmer and the municipality can clean it. It does not stop sargassum, but heavy stretches tend to be shorter than on open coast.
Check it yourself, day by day
Before you pick dates or sign a lease, look at a sargassum tracker for a few weeks. They publish daily maps, photos and short forecasts by beach, so you can see the pattern instead of guessing.
What it means if you live here
- Beach-side rentals are the most exposed, and also the ones that sell out first
- Colonia-side homes are unaffected, and you drive or bike to whichever beach is clean that week
- During heavy weeks, cenotes and the pools in gated communities are the local plan B
